About the Group
Founded in 2024, the University of London Meditation Group was established as part of the University's wellbeing initiative by the Health and Safety Team. The aim has been to develop resources and provide guidance on the wide variety of meditation techniques and the increasingly widespread use of mindfulness techniques, many of which are used as interventions for individual mental health challenges. The group does not provide these as a therapeutic approach but can refer people to appropriate resources as necessary. Instead we see these practices as a commonly available approach to support mental wellbeing and to help individuals to thrive in their academic studies, their careers and life in general.
The group is run by volunteers and is supported by the university's Health and Safety and Organisational Development teams who kindly allow us to use the Senate House staff training room resources at no charge. The group is staffed by volunteers and it endeavours to provide all of its guidance and resources at no charge except when there is no viable alternative.
The group is open to staff, students and alumni of the university, its schools and colleges.
Our coordinator and meditation coach is Keith, himself a graduate of the university and an alumnus of Kings College. He has nearly fifty years' experience as a meditation practitioner and was for several years the approved instructor in Buddhism and Meditation for the now defunct Inner London Education Authority. He is a retired Health and Safety consultant and a trained stress management counselor. When possible, he likes to practice with his furry friend, Benji.
