Introductory courses

Taming the Mind

This course over three consecutive weeks looks at the application of mindfulness/awareness meditation practice.

Week one: The Untamed Mind – looks at how we operate in “autopilot” mode and how we become lost in distraction. The fundamental mindfulness/awareness meditation technique is introduced with a guided practice session.

Week two: The Mind at Rest: - examines the result of the continued application of mindfulness/awareness practice and the wider context of the practice in everyday life.

Week three: Challenges to Meditation Practice: - examines the various ways in which the mind seeks to follow old habitual patterns. We introduce some time-honoured remedies to help us continue with our meditation practice.

At the end of the course participants should have been able to establish a routine of regular meditation practice. On completion, participants may choose to become full members of the University of London Meditation Group and have access to further study and practice opportunities. See our Membership page for more details.

Insight Meditation

A new offering this autumn is a four week course introducing guided insight meditation techniques. We look at perception, emotion and thought in the context of mindfulness meditation.

Week one: Connecting with the senses - introduces mindfulness of body techniques that can ground us into the present moment.

Week two: Connecting with feelings - here we look at expanding the mindfulness technique to connecting with the feeling tone of our perceptions.

Week three: Here we take a closer look at mindful consideration of thought and emotion.

Week four: We begin to bring our practice and insights together into the everyday world.

At the end of the course participants should have a greater appreciation of their perceptual world and be able to establish a regular connection with practice.
